Printed vs. Digital Prescription Pads: Which Is Right for Your Practice?
More and more practices are using some form of electronic prescription, but the printed prescription pad is still part of daily life for most doctors in Mexico. Before deciding whether it's worth continuing to print or switching entirely to digital, it's worth looking at what each option actually solves and where it falls short.
What each option solves
A digital prescription (from an app, a practice-management system, or an electronic-record platform) has clear advantages: it can be resent by email or WhatsApp to the patient, it's automatically backed up, and it's easier to search in a history. A printed prescription pad, on the other hand, doesn't depend on internet access, battery life, or the system working at that exact moment: the patient leaves the appointment with paper in hand, with no other dependency.
For many patients (especially older ones, or those heading straight to a physical pharmacy) printed paper is still what they expect to receive at the end of an appointment.
When it makes sense to keep printing
If your practice doesn't have (or doesn't want to depend on) a digital system, the printed prescription pad is still the simplest, lowest-friction option: no new platform to learn, no risk of an internet outage stopping the appointment, and the patient leaves with something physical with no extra steps.
It's also common to use it as a backup even if your practice already has a digital system: for the day the system fails, there's no signal, or you simply prefer not to depend on a screen in front of the patient.
It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing
Most of the practices we see in Guadalajara and the rest of Mexico don't pick just one: they use digital for records and follow-up, and printed for whatever the patient takes home that same day. Having a printed prescription pad with your letterhead, your license number, and your practice's details doesn't compete with your digital system: it complements it.
